Chitrabani is the social communication centre
sponsored by the Kolkata Province of the Society of Jesus.
The involvement of the Society of Jesus and of its college
(St. Xavier's) in the mass media is indeed the logical extension
of a long involvement in education.
The objective of Chitrabani is to spread a mass media culture
that helps people to integrate harmoniously the communication
media into their cultural lives. Thus, people will benefit
from the media while remaining free in front of them, and
will eventually become responsible communicators themselves.
Chitrabani produces radio programmes, films, slides, photographs,
posters, etc. consonant with the aims mentioned above. The
centre conducts research to ensure production of efficient
programmes but also to gain a deeper understanding of the
action of the media in society. Chitrabani imparts training
to persons who, through such training, can improve their
service to the nation.
