Chitrabani is a professional social communication
centre, set up in 1970 as an extension service of St. Xavier's
College, Calcutta. Subsequently it is registered under the
West Bengal Societies Registration Act and is recognized
by the State Government as a voluntary educational institution
in the field of social communication. The College and Chitrabani
are run by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits).
St. Xavier's College, Calcutta dispenses education to youth,
irrespective of caste, race or religion, since 1860. The
involvement of the Jesuits in the mass media has been the
logical conclusion of their over 450 years of involvement
in education around the world.
The objective of Chitrabani is to develop professionalism
and scholarship in the media and to spread a mass media
culture that helps people to integrate the communication
media into their cultural lives. The centre also aims to
develop critical awareness and alternative visions of the
media. Thus, people will benefit from the media while remaining
free in front of them, and will eventually become responsible
communicators themselves.
Consonant with this aim the centre offers a variety of services
in media training, research and production. It also offers
a number of specialized, short-term diploma and certificate
courses to aspiring media professionals, community workers
and educators.
The faculty is drawn from distinguished professionals in
the field. Over the years, they have developed an excellent
rapport with the program participants, which ensures high
degree of involvement and participation, a hallmark of this
centre.
Chitrabani is more than an academic institute, and more
than a production centre. Through its training, production
and research activities, it is
A laboratory or experimental centre for creative persons
interested in more than business
An educational centre where serious students of the media
can find support and can exchange ideas
A social centre where persons committed to development can
work together.

Admissions
An
over view
Our courses are designed primarily for people who are planning
a career in the media. They go beyond the technical training
to social communications where the participant is encouraged
to question the social framework in which the media operate.
Each
course offers opportunity for students to interact with
media professionals - filmmakers, editors, journalists,
critics, photographers, Advertising and PR professionals
who comprise our teaching faculty.
Besides
to classroom study, emphasis will be given to group projects,
independent study and assignments.
Chitrabani
awards its own diplomas and certificates to participants
who successfully complete course requirements.
One such requirement is compulsory attendance for all lectures
and group activities. This will be taken into account while
giving final grade point average.
The
Credit System
The Institute has introduced credit system in its course
structure. As per this structure, one-credit represents
20 hours of class time or 10 sessions (of two hours
each) in a particular subject.
Classes
are usually held at Chitrabani or any of its extension centres
in the afternoon or evenings. Extension centers may follow
different timings. Practical classes which require long
time (e. g camera demo) is held from morning to evening
(about 8 hours a day). These will be announced in advance
in the students' notice board.
In
addition to every hour of class time, a student is expected
to put in two hours or more of private study by way of reading,
reflection, assignments, etc.
To
qualify for any one of Chitrabani's diploma/certificate,
a student should successfully complete the following requirements:
75% attendance and an average grade 'C' in the final.
Chitrabani
offers no hostel facilities and out-of-town students must
make their own arrangements. There are a lot of residential
flats and bungalows in areas surrounding this institute.
Chitrabani will assist the student to find accommodation
in these areas. It is unlikely that there will be difficulty
in getting premises to stay.
Advance
Advice
The course work is demanding. Assignments, weekend activities
may take more time and energy than the term 'evening' classes'
commonly connotes. What you gain will depend largely on
your own initiative and enthusiasm.
Over
the last 39 years, Chitrabani has built up a reputation
for its quality of courses, and flexibility and creativity
in teaching-learning methods.
The
diplomas and certificates it awards do not have any academic
recognition from the university, nor are they 'government
recognized' for public sector employment. However, Chitrabani
alumnae stand witness to its reach to professional bodies
in media production and corporate and social communication.
